OWH Names Doc and Eddie's "Best Barbecue"

Omaha World-Herald food reviewer Nichole Aksamit named Doc & Eddie's BBQ her pick for "Best Barbecue" in 2007. (Note: She made her selection only from the restaurants she reviewed for the World-Herald in 2007.)

Aksamit reviewed the restaurant in July 2007.

She writes, "The super-tasty smoked meats made it worth the trek out west."

Bones Brew & BBQ Now Open

As GOBS' own intrepid reporter Bill MacKenzie first divulged a few weeks back, the former Boston's pizza near 84th & Giles in LaVista has been transformed into Omaha's newest BBQ restaurant, Bones Brew & BBQ, at 8045 S. 83rd Avenue.

As the story goes, MacKenzie was eating at Boston's (in lieu of one of his regular BBQ haunts) when he discovered that they would be renovating the space into a new barbeque restaurant the following week!

According to a news item in today's Omaha World-Herald, Chef Glenn Wheeler and Bones' co-owner John Davis grew up in Michigan City, Indiana. Wheeler noted they have added a nonsmoking bar section and kept many of the Boston's staff members.

The menu features barbeque wings, ribs, and brisket -- plus salmon, catfish, burgers, pizzas, soup, and "44 varieties of beer." They offer dine-in eating, plus carryout and catering services. The phone number is (402) 592-BEER (402-592-2337).

Hours are:
Monday - Thursday, 3 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Friday - Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Smokin' Tailgators at Jack Daniel's

GOBS members Kenny and Tammy Meyer of Omaha were invited to participate in the Jack Daniel's Invitational in Tennessee in late October 2007.

To qualify for "The Jack," U.S. teams must have already won a competition in which 50 or more teams participated, or they must have won a competition of at least 25 teams that has been designated a "state championship." However, not only must these teams be culinary experts, they must also be lucky. With more than 100 teams qualifying each year ... and because of the limited space in Lynchburg ... the number of teams is limited, and entrants from states with multiple contestants are selected by lottery.

On Oct. 27, the results were in, and Smokin' Tailgators finished ninth overall! A record 60 champion teams from the U.S. and 21 teams from countries across the world including, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom, fought for this year’s title. The international field was the largest in all of competitive barbequing’s history.
